Legal Arguments in Amsal Sitepu Case Deemed Unacceptable to Public Reason

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Chairman of DPR Commission III, Habiburokhman, stated that Amsal Christy Sitepu was merely carrying out his duties as a videographer. Therefore, the public is said not to accept Amsal being charged under corruption articles in the alleged markup case of the village profile video project. “This is a case that has truly captured the public’s attention. Where Amsal Sitepu, a videographer carrying out his work, is sentenced or prosecuted under Tipikor articles, with a ratio that cannot be accepted by the public, arguments that cannot be accepted by the public,” said Habiburokhman during a press conference at the DPR Building, Senayan, Jakarta, on Wednesday (1/4/2026). Habiburokhman said that creative work cannot be assumed to be like price inflation in goods procurement. “Commission III responded yesterday by holding a special working meeting, and among them, in the special working meeting yesterday, a special RDPU, we proposed a suspension of detention, which was finally signed by Mr Sufmi Dasco Ahmad directly and sent to Medan. And Alhamdulillah, Mr Amsal received a suspension of detention yesterday,” he stated. Habiburokhman also praised the Panel of Judges for understanding legal values and a sense of justice when acquitting Amsal. “Creative work has a subjective value, and as long as there is agreement, that price agreement emerges. So once again, we highly appreciate the Panel of Judges. Because we are the party that continuously pushes for improved welfare of judges,” added Habiburokhman.
