Leftist speeches for students

JOMBANG, East Java: The military has given recordings of Democratic People's Party (PRD) leaders' speeches to students of Tebuireng Islamic boarding school to prove that the leftist group is communist.

Chief of the Armed Forces' Sociopolitical Affairs Lt. Gen. Syarwan Hamid gave the cassette of the speeches by Budiman Sudjatmiko and Dita Indah Sari to school master Yusuf Hasyim Sunday.

Syarwan said the cassette is clear evidence that the political activists were disseminating communism and undermining the legitimate government, Antara reported.

Together with Minister of Religious Affairs Tarmizi Taher, local Brawijaya army chief Brig. Gen. Muchdi PR and numerous local Moslem leaders, Syarwan was attending a ceremony in remembrance of the rebellions of the defunct Indonesian Communist Party in 1948 and 1965.

Sept. 30 is a day of national mourning as the country observes the aborted coup attempt by the Indonesian Communist Party.

The government has accused PRD activists of inciting the July 27 riots in Jakarta. Sudjatmiko and other top PRD leaders have been arrested and face subversion charges for their alleged part in the unrest. (pan)
