Left-wing Party Candidate Named Hitler Mussolini Elected Mayor in Peru

Istanbul (ANTARA) – Hitler Mussolini Simeon Flores has been elected mayor of the district of Queropalca in Peru’s Andes after the vote count was completed last Sunday, despite his name recalling two of the 20th century’s most notorious dictators.

According to local media reports on Friday, the 45-year-old candidate representing the left-wing Ahora Nación party secured 229 votes, or 34.54 per cent of the valid ballots.

His rival, Gaspar Benilde Osorio Zambrano of the Renovación Popular party, received 204 votes, equivalent to 30.77 per cent. Itala Yovana Santillan Vara of the País para Todos party won 187 votes, or 28.21 per cent of valid ballots.

The two other candidates received considerably fewer votes. The candidate from Alianza para el Progreso received 35 votes, or 5.28 per cent, while the candidate from Partido Democrático Somos Perú secured just eight votes, or 1.21 per cent of all valid votes.

There were 707 ballots in total: 663 valid votes, 30 blank ballots and 14 invalid ballots.

Flores’s margin over Zambrano was 25 votes, while his lead over Vara was 42 votes.

Local media outlet Ahora Regional reported on Friday that Flores had won the election. Peru’s electoral authorities have counted all the ballots from the district, but the winner is still to be formally declared, the report said.

The name Hitler Mussolini Simeon Flores recalls Adolf Hitler, the leader of Nazi Germany, and Benito Mussolini, Italy’s fascist dictator, during the Second World War.

Before Flores, Peru elected another politician named Hitler. Hitler Alba was elected mayor of Yungar in the Andes for the 2011–2014 term and won re-election in 2018.

The Queropalca local election was held as part of Peru’s regional and municipal elections on 4 October.
