Lee Kuan Yew's House Dispute Concludes: The Final Outcome
The Singaporean government has officially taken over ownership of the home of the late nation-founder Lee Kuan Yew. This decision simultaneously concludes a family feud that has lasted for nearly a decade. The takeover of the asset was also conducted to preserve a site deemed to possess high historical value and great national importance for Singapore.
According to AFP, the Singapore Land Authority (SLA) and the National Heritage Board (NHB) provided an official explanation regarding the current status of the property, which is located in the heart of Singapore’s shopping district. They stated that the Singaporean government now holds full control over the site to halt the long-standing conflict between Lee Kuan Yew’s children, which has been ongoing since 2015.
“The government is taking over the site… to preserve it in accordance with its historical significance and national interest,” the joint statement from the SLA and NHB read, as reported by AFP on Sunday.
The house dispute began when Lee Kuan Yew’s eldest son, former Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, desired for the two-storey bungalow to be preserved. However, his two younger siblings, Lee Hsien Yang and the late Lee Wei Ling, insisted that the house be demolished in accordance with their father’s will to maintain family privacy.
“(The heritage board) will conduct an in-depth study of this site and review options on how the site can be developed into a public space in a manner that respects Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s wishes for privacy,” the official statement added.
As a historical note, the house was the location of important meetings during the 1950s that marked Singapore’s transition from a British colony to an independent nation. Lee Kuan Yew himself occupied the house from the mid-1940s until the end of his life, and the property value is estimated to reach 30 million Singapore dollars, or approximately US$ 23 million.
Although the family feud was previously marked by allegations of political exploitation regarding their father’s legacy, the state takeover is considered the end of the fierce rivalry. Currently, one of Lee Kuan Yew’s siblings, Lee Hsien Yang, has been living abroad since 2022 amidst evolving dynamics.
