JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The British mining company Anglo American will sell a metallurgical coal mine in the Bowen Basin, Queensland, Australia, to the privately owned British-based mining group Dhilmar Ltd. The transaction value is 3.88 billion U.S. dollars, equivalent to around Rp 68 trillion (assuming an exchange rate of Rp 17,700 per U.S. dollar).

Dhilmar Ltd is led by Alexander Ramlie, who serves as Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Ramlie has a long track record in Indonesia’s mining industry, including serving as President Director of PT Amman Mineral International Tbk (AMMN).

Through this transaction, Anglo American aims to complete the wind-down of its coal business for steelmaking, the company said in a statement, cited by Reuters, on Friday (22 May 2026). The Bowen Basin region in Queensland is recognised as one of the world’s largest metallurgical coal producing areas.

Anglo American is selling the asset as part of efforts to divest non-core businesses and reduce the group’s debt ahead of the completion of its merger with Teck Resources, which will form a mining company focused on copper. The deal comprises an upfront cash payment of $2.3 billion and potential further payments of up to $1.58 billion dependent on coal price movements.

Nevertheless, Anglo American’s shares fell 1.7 per cent as the mining sector weakened amid concerns about global inflation. Last year, U.S.-based Peabody Energy withdrew an acquisition offer valued at $3.78 billion for Anglo American’s metallurgical coal assets in Australia. The withdrawal followed the failure to reach an agreement on price reductions after a mine fire incident. Anglo American said it would continue arbitration against Peabody regarding the failed deal.

Dhilmar is a private mining group whose main asset is the Eleonore gold mine in Canada, acquired from Newmont Corp last year.
