Lecturers reluctant to do research

JAKARTA: The country's lack of a scientific culture has resulted in little research being done by universities, especially those in eastern Indonesia, a university rector said on Wednesday.

"The reason for the lack of research is the absence of a culture of lecturers doing research work," the rector of the Sam Ratulangi University in Manado, Lefrand Winston Sondakh, said during a hearing with House of Representatives Commission VII for research, technology and the environment.

Lefrand said fewer than 20 percent of junior lecturers at his university had done any research work over the past five years.

"The percentage of senior lecturers who do research work is even lower," he said. --JP
