The annual tradition ahead of Idulfitri is once again adorning the traditional markets of Pamanukan, Subang, West Java. Vendors are offering woven yellow palm leaves used as containers for ketupat, the signature Lebaran dish.

The presence of these ketupat shell vendors signals that Lebaran is drawing near. The public is beginning to seek out ketupat shells to complete their special festive dishes on the day of victory. This tradition not only revitalises the local economy but also preserves a cultural heritage passed down through generations.

While sitting on a simple mat by the roadside in front of shops, Enjang Wandi (43) deftly crafts ketupat wrappers from coconut leaves in various sizes and colour combinations to attract buyers.

Enjang Wandi (43) explained that he began selling his wares to meet the public’s enthusiasm in preparing Lebaran dishes.

“I started selling ketupat shells since Wednesday,” said Enjang, met at his stall on Thursday (19/3).

According to Enjang, he can produce up to 300 ketupat shells in a day. He offers prices of Rp15,000 to Rp20,000 per bundle containing 10 pieces.

“People already know the prices, so with Rp15,000 to Rp20,000 per bundle of 10, buyers don’t haggle anymore,” he revealed.

However, Enjang senses a difference in the Lebaran atmosphere this year compared to previous years. “Last year, three days before Lebaran, the ketupat shells were already selling well. Right now, there are few buyers, but there’s still two days left; hopefully, they sell out before Lebaran,” he said.

Ketupat shell vendors in Pamanukan, Subang, are seen busily weaving yellow palm leaves into ketupat shells of various shapes and sizes. The market atmosphere is lively, with streets adorned by neatly arranged rows of ketupat shells.
