JAKARTA – The Lebaran return flow from Sumatra Island to Java Island is now entering a crucial phase. After a temporary lull at the start of the period, the movement of returnees is increasing again.

PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry estimates that the Sumatra-Java return flow will peak on 28–29 March 2026, specifically today and tomorrow.

This state-owned enterprise also records that up to now, around 49% of returnees have returned to Java. This means that more than half of the service users have yet to make their return journey, so a potential surge in flow is predicted to occur in the near term.

“The return flow does not happen all at once, but increases gradually. After a flat period, the movement is now strengthening again and is projected to peak soon,” said Heru in an official statement on Friday (27/3/2026).

“Therefore, we are ensuring that all operational readiness is at an optimal level, while urging the public to avoid the peak period estimated for Saturday (28/3) and Sunday (29/3),” he added.

Meanwhile, the number of vehicles that have returned is recorded at 118,297 units, or equivalent to 49% of the total outbound vehicles at 239,920 units.

With about 51% of returnees still remaining, the traffic surge is expected to be concentrated in a short time.

In Merak, arrangements are being made through Rest Area KM 43, KM 68, and the Southern Ring Road (JLS).

Meanwhile, in Bakauheni, support points include Rest Area KM 49B, KM 20B, Gayam Terminal, and Gunung Jati Restaurant, to ensure vehicle distribution remains controlled and does not pile up in the port area.

These figures represent an increase of 15.3% compared to last year. The number of vehicles also rose 21.8% to 208,688 units.

Meanwhile, the flow from Java to Sumatra recorded 1,121,851 passengers, up 2.9%, with a total of 289,623 vehicles, growing 6.5% compared to the same period last year.
