Lebaran Return Flow: Brebes Salted Egg Souvenir Centre Swarmed by Travellers
The Lebaran return flow has triggered a surge in activity at the salted egg souvenir centres typical of Brebes along the Pantura route in Brebes Regency, Central Java. Travellers heading back to the Jabodetabek area are crowding the rows of salted egg shops to purchase the region’s signature souvenirs.
The increase in the number of buyers has directly impacted sales. Traders’ turnover is reported to have risen up to three times compared to ordinary days, with average daily sales reaching 15,000 salted eggs.
Entering the three days post-Lebaran, the flow of vehicles from travellers passing through the Brebes Pantura route has begun to thicken. Crowds are visible at several salted egg souvenir centres along Jalan Pangeran Diponegoro in Brebes, which has become a favourite stopover point for travellers.
Dozens of buyers are seen queuing at the shops lined up in the area. They are purchasing various variants of salted eggs, from grilled salted eggs, boiled, to steamed.
One traveller from Jakarta, Yuyun (47), admitted that almost every year she makes time to buy Brebes’ signature salted eggs when returning to her hometown in Tegal.
“Yes, to eat with the family ourselves. It will also be shared with relatives and neighbours as Lebaran souvenirs,” said Yuyun on Tuesday (24/3/2026).
The owner of a salted egg shop, Dhani Bagus Purnama, said the sales increase has been felt since the first day of Lebaran and continues through the return flow period.
“In fact, since the day of Lebaran, sales have always increased. Every day, at least 15,000 salted eggs are sold out and bought up by travellers,” said Dhani.
He explained that the prices of salted eggs vary, starting from Rp8,500 per egg for boiled salted eggs and Rp9,500 per egg for grilled salted eggs.
In addition to salted eggs, travellers are also hunting for various other Brebes souvenirs such as salted egg crackers, salted egg sauce, shallots, fried onions, rambak crackers, and presto milkfish.
These eggs are known for their more savoury taste and high nutritional content, making them a popular ingredient in various dishes.
