Lebaran 2026 Train Passengers Reach 5 Million, Highest in Last 5 Years
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) recorded the highest occupancy during the 2026 Lebaran transportation period in the last five years. The peak achievement occurred from 11 March to 1 April 2026, with long-distance and local train services operated by KAI serving 5.08 million passengers. Vice President of Corporate Communication at KAI, Anne Purba, stated that this number exceeds the previous year’s achievement during the same Lebaran period, namely 4.7 million passengers in 2025, 4.3 million in 2024, 3.8 million in 2023, and 4.3 million in 2022. “The high mobility of the public during Lebaran was well-served through operational readiness across all lines. This year’s Lebaran transportation recorded the highest achievement in the last five years,” said Anne in an official statement on Sunday (5/3/2026). On several dates, the daily occupancy rate was consistently above 140%, reflecting the high mobility of the public during the Lebaran transportation period. On 22 March 2026, there were 242,808 passengers with an occupancy of 150.7% of the 161,100-seat capacity. On 23 March 2026, there were 247,019 passengers or 154.1% of the 160,252-seat capacity. The highest peak occurred on 24 March 2026 with 250,650 passengers or 153.4% of the 163,432-seat capacity. Then on 25 March 2026, there were 230,822 passengers or 141.2%, and on 29 March 2026, 229,260 passengers or 140.3%. “Occupancy above 100% is a characteristic of long-distance train operations, where one seat can be used by more than one passenger in a single journey through the mechanism of boarding and alighting at intermediate stations,” she said. “This pattern keeps the service capacity optimal, especially during high-mobility periods like Lebaran transportation,” she added. The Ketapang–Pasarsenen route served 17,999 passengers with 208% occupancy of the 8,668-seat capacity, while the Pasarsenen–Ketapang route served 17,238 passengers with 199% occupancy. Punctuality performance also improved.
