Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi projected that the Lebaran 2026 mudik movement will decline by around 1.7 per cent compared with the previous year, from 146.4 million people to around 143.9 million people. ‘In this year’s survey, the number of people who will undertake movement (projected) is 143.9 million. If confronted with the survey, indeed there is a decrease of 1.75 per cent (compared to the previous year),’ the Minister said, quoted by Antara. Purwagandhi said the projection came from a survey conducted by the government before Lebaran transport operations. This survey was conducted by the Ministry of Transport in cooperation with the Bandung Institute of Technology’s Institute of Research and Industry Affiliates (LAPI ITB), the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), and the Ministry of Communications and Digital (Komdigi). He explained that in the previous year’s survey, the number estimated to travel reached around 146.4 million during the Lebaran transport period across Indonesia. However, based on mobile positioning data for 2025 realisation, the number of people who actually travelled was recorded at around 154.6 million, higher than the initial survey results. ‘We, as in prior experience, there is a surge between the survey and realisation, so we must anticipate if a surge arises with numbers different from the survey,’ he said. He added that the majority of Indonesians still treat Lebaran as the main time to go home to their hometowns and celebrate Idul Fitri with family. Dudy said about 50.60 percent of survey respondents stated their travel was to celebrate Idul Fitri in their hometowns with family. By province of origin, the five regions with the most mudik travellers were West Java, the Jakarta Special Capital Region (DKI), East Java, Central Java, and Banten as origin areas. From the side of origin city, the five areas with the highest movement were East Jakarta, Bogor, Bekasi, South Jakarta, and West Jakarta as starting points for people’s journeys. The five main destination cities expected to be destinations for mudik travellers are Kebumen, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Banyumas, and Bandung during this Lebaran mudik period. ‘This is movement within the Jabodetabek area. It seems that the peak is in Bogor Regency with Cianjur as one of the favourite destinations,’ the Minister said.
