Lebaran 2026 Homecoming Begins, 221,000 People Return by Train Today

Some 221,566 long-distance train passengers are scheduled to depart today, Sunday (22/3/2026). This figure indicates a temporary occupancy rate of 137.5 percent, which could still increase as ticket sales continue. Vice President of Corporate Communications at KAI, Anne Purba, explained that occupancy rates above 100 percent are possible due to dynamic travel patterns within a single train consist. “In a single long-distance train journey, one seat can be used by more than one passenger on different routes. This scheme allows the number of passengers served to be greater than the number of available seats on a single route,” Anne said in an official statement on Sunday (22/3/2026). The total number of seats provided for long-distance and local train journeys during the period from 11 March 2026 to 1 April 2026 is 4.49 million. With this achievement, there are still 587,828 seats available for the public to use for the homecoming. “With the remaining capacity, KAI invites the public to plan their homecoming trips well so that the journey is more comfortable, smooth, and enjoyable with the train,” Anne said. KAI also encourages passengers to utilise connecting train services and choose more flexible travel dates to increase their chances of obtaining tickets. The peak of the Lebaran 2026 homecoming is predicted to occur twice in the week, as stated by the President Director of PT Jasa Marga (Persero) Tbk, Rivan A. Purwantono. Citing Antara, the peak of the Lebaran 2026 homecoming is predicted to take place on 24 March 2026 for the first wave. “Our prediction for the homecoming later is on 24 March,” Rivan said during a press conference at the Jasa Marga Training Centre building, Jalan Akses Tol Jatiasih, Bekasi, West Java. Subsequently, the peak of the Lebaran 2026 homecoming is predicted to occur again on 28-29 March 2026.
