Lebanese President Warns Iran Not to Interfere in Domestic Affairs
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has asserted that Iran is not permitted to interfere in the domestic affairs of Lebanon. He accused Tehran of “destroying Lebanon for your own interests.”
“Other countries are trying to help us, but you are not trying to help us. You are destroying this country for your own interests,” Aoun stated, referring to Iran, during an interview with CNN, as reported by Al Arabiya on Tuesday.
The second part of the interview, which took place last Friday, was aired on Monday local time.
Aoun reaffirmed that Beirut seeks to maintain good relations with Iran based on mutual respect and non-interference.
“But remember, Lebanon is a sovereign state, and has a sovereign government. If you want to speak with us, you are welcome, but you must not interfere,” the Lebanese leader stated.
Aoun, a former commander of the Lebanese Armed Forces, stated that Lebanon desires an end to hostilities with Israel “forever.”
He noted that Beirut is prepared, willing, and committed to a diplomatic solution.
“Are you willing? If so, let us sit and talk,” Aoun said. He added that a military solution “will never provide you with security and safety.”
When asked if he would be willing to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Aoun stated that he would not do so until an agreement is reached to end the war.
Aoun remarked that the agreement currently under discussion resembles a “non-aggression” pact, rather than a full peace treaty such as the one between Jordan and Israel.
