Lebanese President Proposes Total Ceasefire with Israel
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has called for a “complete ceasefire” with Israel and urged international support for a new plan to stabilise the country.
In a statement posted on social media, Aoun said the proposal includes “establishing a full ceasefire with the cessation of all Israeli land, air, and sea attacks against Lebanon”.
He stated that the Lebanese Armed Forces would “immediately take control of recently disputed territories, confiscate all weapons there, and disarm Hezbollah whilst dismantling its weapons warehouses and storage facilities”.
Aoun also called for international logistical support for the Lebanese army, saying such assistance is necessary to implement the plan.
He added that Lebanon and Israel must begin “direct negotiations under international auspices” to reach an agreement on implementing these measures.
President Aoun has emphasised the government’s commitment to prioritising peace whilst restructuring domestic security. He has also instructed the Foreign Ministry to lodge a complaint with the United Nations Security Council regarding Israel’s construction of barriers, which he views as a clear violation of international law and an immoral political crime.
Aoun has signed a decree concerning Lebanon’s prime minister-elect Nawaf Salam to form a new government.
