Lebanese President: Massive explosions from Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon threaten negotiations ahead of Rome meeting

Beirut (ANTARA) - Lebanese President Joseph Aoun stated on Friday (31/7) that massive explosions resulting from Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon threaten the implementation of the framework agreement and risk undermining diplomatic negotiations ahead of a scheduled meeting in Rome to discuss the agreement’s execution.

“The timing of these attacks, occurring just before the scheduled session in Rome to continue discussions on the implementation of the trilateral framework, sends a negative message and undermines international efforts aimed at strengthening stability,” Aoun said in a statement.

The massive explosions triggered by Israeli attacks shook areas around Beaufort Castle in southern Lebanon in the early hours of Friday local time, resulting in damage to several houses. The shockwaves from the explosions were felt across much of southern Lebanon, according to the Lebanese state news agency, National News Century (NNA).

The Lebanese President condemned the ongoing Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon, particularly the explosions targeting infrastructure and cultural sites, including Beaufort Castle, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. He noted that the attacks have caused widespread damage, endangered civilians, and threatened the security of villages throughout the southern region of Lebanon.

Citing data from the National Geophysical Centre of Lebanon, Aoun stated that the powerful explosions around the castle triggered seismic waves equivalent to a magnitude 3.8 earthquake. He described the incident as a dangerous escalation, a blatant violation of existing commitments, and a direct threat to the framework agreement.
