Lebak Woman Swears While Stepping on Al-Qur'an, DPR's Commission VIII Urges Religious Guidance
Police have secured two women with the initials NR and MT in connection with an alleged blasphemy case involving stepping on the Al-Qur’an. Deputy Chairman of DPR RI Commission VIII, Singgih Januratmoko, has urged that the perpetrators be dealt with firmly.
“This incident is highly concerning as it touches on the sanctity of religious teachings. We urge law enforcement to act firmly, professionally, and transparently so that justice can be upheld,” Singgih told reporters on Sunday (11/4/2026).
He assessed that cases like this not only impact the individuals involved but also have the potential to cause social unrest. Moreover, such cases can hurt the feelings of the religious community if not handled wisely.
Singgih also advised the public not to be provoked by emotions and not to spread unverified information. He asked all parties to leave the legal process to the competent authorities.
“In situations like this, the public must remain calm and maintain conduciveness. Do not let unclear information stir up the atmosphere,” he added.
This Golkar Party politician also emphasised the importance of strengthening religious education and understanding of tolerance values in society. According to him, this incident must serve as a collective lesson to prevent recurrence in the future.
“We need to strengthen mental and religious guidance in society, so that even the smallest issues are not resolved in ways that violate norms and laws,” he asserted.
The Root of the Matter: Swearing While Stepping on the Al-Qur’an
The Lebak Police Public Relations Officer, Iptu Moestafa Ibnu Syafir, said the case began when a woman with the initials NR felt that her makeup tools were missing after ordering them online. Without clear evidence, NR accused her friend, MT, of taking the makeup items consisting of powder and perfume.
“So, they are actually friends; the salon owner ordered the package and it was stored. The owner accused MT, and since she was not satisfied with the admission, she then took an oath (while stepping on) the Al-Qur’an,” Moestafa said on Saturday (11/4/2026).
Currently, both women have been designated as suspects.
