Leaving Range Anxiety Behind: Changan Confident with REEV Technology
CHONGQING, KOMPAS.com – The development of electrification technology in the Indonesian automotive market is becoming increasingly dynamic. Along with the variety of environmentally friendly vehicle options, one technology now gaining attention is the Range Extended Electric Vehicle (REEV). Setiawan Surya, CEO of Changan Indonesia, explains that in essence, REEV is part of the broader family of hybrid technology. The evolution of hybrid systems continues, and REEV represents one of the latest achievements in that development. Interestingly, Setiawan is quite optimistic about market acceptance in Indonesia. This is believed to facilitate the adaptation process for this new technology. “I think it’s not difficult (to educate the public), because in Indonesia, there have already been those using similar technology. The difference is that what’s already on the market doesn’t have a plug-in charging feature,” Setiawan told reporters when met in Chongqing, China, on Sunday (19/4/2026). On the other hand, automotive consumer behaviour in Indonesia has changed significantly. Increasingly open access to information makes prospective buyers today more critical before deciding to purchase a new vehicle. They no longer rely solely on brochures but actively conduct independent research through various digital channels. “Indonesian consumers now, before buying a car, they look at reviews, search for reviews left and right. One of them from the media which also provides education. So, when they make a decision now, the information they gather feels more complete,” said Setiawan. Seeing this phenomenon, Changan Indonesia is preparing a multi-channel strategy to reach prospective consumers. The role of mass media, sales staff in the dealer network, and direct experience through test drives become the main pillars in providing comprehensive understanding of REEV technology. “So, indeed, as sellers, we still have to educate, and the easiest education is one of them through the media (mass). Then, also through the sales network. Each sales staff also conducts education. Then, through test drives,” he said. According to Setiawan, consumers in big cities may not be too difficult to educate. Therefore, the company will be more aggressive in providing education to consumers in small cities or rural areas.
