Leaving America: AI Experts Mass Migration to China
The Artificial Intelligence (AI) industry is currently witnessing a shift in global technological dominance, marked by the migration of talent from United States tech giants to China.
Alibaba, for instance, has reportedly recruited Google DeepMind researcher Hao Zhou, who will be tasked with supporting the development of Qwen AI. Similarly, Wu Yonghui, the former Vice President of Research at Google DeepMind, left the company to lead research at ByteDance Seed last February.
Furthermore, Yang Zhilin, who previously worked at Meta AI and Google Brain, has founded the startup Moonshot, the creator of the Kimi AI model. Additionally, Yao Shunyu left his role at OpenAI last year to become the Chief AI Scientist at Tencent.
CNBC International notes that many Chinese nationals are seeking employment in their home country due to uncertainties regarding US immigration policies, even if it means accepting lower salaries. Concurrently, China is actively attempting to attract talent by increasing its investments, pouring more funds into the sector to achieve technological breakthroughs within the next five years.
These experts are bringing American-style approaches to AI development in China, driven by ambitious goals. Yao Shunyu previously stated his long-term personal objective is to build an organisation capable of achieving Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). He also emphasised that ‘super apps’ are not limited to US products like ChatGPT or Claude, noting that there is vast, untapped potential worth trillions of dollars. Yao added that the future of AI in China lies in smaller models with more consistent performance on fundamental tasks.
