Leather workers go on strike

DEMAK, Central Java: Hundreds of workers at a leather
processing company, PT PA, went on strike here yesterday,
demanding that their daily wage be increased from Rp 2,700 to Rp
3,000.

They also demanded a meal allowance and menstrual leave for
female workers.

The government has set the minimum wage in the province at Rp
3,000. This took into effect on April 1.

During negotiations involving representatives of the workers
and the local branch of the All-Indonesia Labor Union, the
company's management said it willing to fulfill most of the
workers' demands.

The protesters then dispersed peacefully under the watchful
eyes of dozens of security officers. (har)
