Leapmotor Officially Enters Indonesia as Stellantis Strengthens Electric Vehicle Competition
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Leapmotor, a technology-based electric vehicle brand from China, is set to enter Indonesia through PT Indomobil National Distributor. Its arrival will enrich the Stellantis Brand House portfolio in Indonesia whilst strengthening competition in the national electric vehicle segment.
Leapmotor operates with an engineering-driven approach and mastery of core technology as the primary foundation for product development. Amid an increasingly competitive global electric vehicle landscape, the company positions its technical strength as its DNA in delivering efficient and innovative future mobility solutions.
Founded on 24 December 2015 in Zhejiang, China, Leapmotor has from the outset focused on strengthening internal research and development (R&D), including vehicle electronic architecture and modern technology systems. This strategy has served as a key differentiator amid fierce competition in the new energy vehicle (NEV) market, where Leapmotor has grown steadily through a solid manufacturing foundation and core technology development.
In its early phase, Leapmotor established manufacturing facilities in Hangzhou as part of its industrial readiness. Its first model, the S01, was introduced in 2018 as a demonstration of its internal technology integration capabilities. Since commencing commercial production in 2019, the company has continued to strengthen its production capacity and expand its product portfolio.
In recent years, Leapmotor has transformed from a domestic player into a NEV contender with an increasingly large production scale. The company employs a vertical integration approach to ensure consistent quality control whilst accelerating innovation, encompassing the development of electric motors, vehicle control systems, software, battery integration, and smart technology.
“In the modern electric vehicle era, differentiation is no longer solely about design or specifications, but about the vehicle’s ‘brain’. Leapmotor builds electric vehicles as a technology platform oriented towards the future of the global automotive industry,” said Stellantis Brand House Indonesia CEO Tan Kim Piauw.
Entering its global expansion phase, Leapmotor forged a strategic partnership with Stellantis in 2023, further strengthened through the establishment of Leapmotor International in 2024 as a global distribution platform. This collaboration represents an important step in accelerating Leapmotor’s expansion into various international markets, including Indonesia.
Tan added that Leapmotor’s presence is part of a long-term strategy to deliver technology-based mobility solutions in Indonesia.
“With a foundation of internal research and development and mastery of core electric vehicle systems — from motors and batteries to software — Leapmotor will enrich the Stellantis Brand House in Indonesia with solid engineering capabilities. Its presence is also part of our efforts to deliver future mobility options that are innovative, relevant, and increasingly aligned with the needs of Indonesian consumers,” said Tan Kim Piauw.
Leapmotor’s entry into Indonesia is expected to broaden public access to efficient and competitive electric vehicles, whilst marking a new chapter in the development of the national automotive industry as it increasingly moves towards electrification.
