Leaked Secret Document Reveals US Urges Countries to Join Alliance to Control Strait of Hormuz
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, WASHINGTON—The Wall Street Journal newspaper has cited an internal telegram from the US State Department stating that Washington is urging other countries to join a new international alliance that will seek to ensure ships can sail through the Strait of Hormuz.
The newspaper reported that the internal telegram from the US State Department has been sent to US embassies and calls on US diplomats to pressure foreign governments to join the new alliance.
The letter, titled “Building Maritime Navigation Freedom,” states:
“Your participation will strengthen our collective ability to restore freedom of navigation and protect the global economy, and collective cooperation is necessary to demonstrate unity of resolve and impose meaningful consequences on Iran’s efforts to obstruct ships crossing the strait.”
It explains that the telegram mentions that the new US-led alliance will share information, coordinate diplomatically, and implement sanctions.
Additionally, a maritime task force will complement other maritime security working groups, including maritime planning efforts led by the UK and France.
The newspaper quoted a statement from a US administration official saying that the idea of the new alliance is one of many diplomatic and political tools available to President Trump.
Trump criticises US allies
The Wall Street Journal reported that the proposal to form the new alliance emerged just a few weeks after US President Donald Trump announced that the Strait of Hormuz is fully open and ready to operate.
