Leaked: Donald Trump Berates Netanyahu, Pressuring Ceasefire in Lebanon
The relationship between US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reportedly reached a point of extreme tension. According to reports from US official sources, Trump used harsh language and insults against Netanyahu during a telephone call on Monday (1/6), following Israel’s military escalation in Lebanon, which is viewed as a threat to regional stability and US diplomatic interests.
This tension is driven by Trump’s concerns that Israel’s increasingly aggressive military actions in Lebanon could destroy peace negotiations between the US and Iran. Previously, Tehran had threatened to withdraw from the negotiating table in protest of Israel’s ground invasion and bombing of Hezbollah targets.
According to an Axios report citing two US officials and one source familiar with the conversation, Trump called Netanyahu ‘crazy’ and accused him of being ungrateful. Trump even referenced his past political support, claiming he saved Netanyahu from legal repercussions in Israeli corruption cases. ‘You are truly crazy. You would be in prison if it weren’t for me. I saved you. Everyone hates you now. Everyone hates Israel because of this,’ Trump reportedly said in a summary of the leaked conversation.
Trump is reportedly incensed because Netanyahu is perceived to be engaging in disproportionate escalation, including plans for massive bombings in Beirut that risk high civilian casualties and further isolate Israel internationally. Trump’s anger appears driven by his ambition to swiftly reach a deal with Iran. A memorandum currently being negotiated between the US and Iran includes a clause for a cessation of hostilities in Lebanon. Israeli escalation is seen as a primary obstacle making Tehran reluctant to commit to a long-term agreement.
Despite the behind-the-scenes tension, Trump continues to project a positive public image. Via his Truth Social account, he stated that talks with Iran are progressing rapidly. Conversely, the Israeli Prime Minister’s office released a more diplomatic official statement. Netanyahu asserted that Israel will strike targets in Beirut if Hezbollah does not cease its attacks on Israeli territory, maintaining that Israel’s position remains consistent with its right to self-defence, even as US sources claim Netanyahu eventually yielded to Trump’s pressure during the call.
This situation places Netanyahu in a difficult position, as he also faces domestic pressure ahead of the year-end general elections to continue military pressure on Hezbollah.
