Lazisnu and Baznas Allocate Rp2.6 Billion for Pesantren MSMEs in Poverty-Prone Areas
NU Care-Lazisnu, together with the National Amil Zakat Agency (Baznas), is strengthening the umat economic empowerment programme through developing 200 micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in four areas deemed vulnerable to poverty and social issues. The programme will be implemented in Indramayu, Jember, Serang, and Pringsewu with total funding of Rp2.6 billion. Of this amount, Rp2 billion originates from Baznas RI, while Rp600 million is channelled by Lazisnu PBNU in the form of street vending carts, start-up capital, and intensive mentoring for two years. Executive Director of NU Care-Lazisnu, Riri Khariroh, said the programme is designed not merely as immediate economic aid, but as a model of long-term collaboration to strengthen community self-reliance. “We want this programme to serve as an example of synergy between Lazisnu and Baznas in building the economy of the umat in a tangible and sustainable way,” Riri said at the programme launch at the PBNU Building, Jakarta, on Thursday (21/5/2026). According to him, the four target areas were chosen because they have a high level of economic vulnerability. In addition, the region also has significant potential for developing an economy based on pesantren and local communities. “In these areas there are many small communities that require economic strengthening. The pesantrens also have a spirit of development and independence,” he said. A total of 50 MSME actors in each region will receive benefits in the initial phase. The food and beverage sector is prioritised because it is considered closest to community needs and easy to develop. “Small businesses such as fried snack sellers and beverages are the main focus because their potential is large to grow rapidly if properly mentored,” Riri explained.
