Lawyer Responds After Roy Suryo Reported to Police for Alleged Defamation
Roy Suryo has been reported for alleged defamation and slander by the chairman of Gibranisti, Taufik Bilfaqih, at the South Jakarta Police. Roy Suryo’s legal counsel suspects the move is an attempt to disrupt the pre-trial process currently being filed by Roy Suryo at the South Jakarta District Court.
“We consider this possibly an attempt to disturb our concentration, because we have also filed a third pre-trial application,” Roy Suryo’s lawyer, Abdul Gafur Sangadji, told reporters on Thursday (16/7/2026).
Gafur said the report against his client at the South Jakarta Police appeared to be a deliberate attempt to find fault. According to him, the complainants seem intent on disturbing the concentration of Roy Suryo and his legal team as they pursue the pre-trial hearing.
“Regarding this report, I am truly convinced it is a groundless report. Yes. A report without substance. It is merely a nuisance. Why do I say it lacks substance? Because if the complainant claims that Mas Roy defamed and sullied his good name regarding Mas Roy’s diploma, well, Mas Roy is in fact the victim,” he explained.
According to Gafur, the complainants made a manoeuvre by dredging up Roy Suryo’s doctoral studies at UNJ. He said they then created a podcast to discuss the matter.
“Then, on their personal podcasts, they spread news which — even though they have since taken the news down, as they now wish to defend themselves saying ‘We never claimed Mas Roy’s diploma was fake’ or ‘His doctorate is fake’ —” he said.
“But they forget that Mas Roy is an IT expert. A telematics expert. All the videos they once uploaded had already been downloaded by Mas Roy. And the videos that first slandered Mas Roy, they took down from their YouTube channel, as if wanting to erase their digital footprints. But because Mas Roy is skilled in telematics, he had already downloaded them as evidence,” he continued.
For this reason, Gafur said Roy Suryo plans to file counter-reports against the podcast makers to the police. He said the reports would be made in the near future.
“Mas Roy has confirmed to us, his legal team. Of course, as Mas Roy’s counsel, I must defend my client’s interests. When Mas Roy confirmed that he would file the report soon, not long from now, within the next few days, it will be filed with the Metro Jaya Regional Police,” he asserted.
Gafur said Roy Suryo has already identified the podcast makers who discussed him. He has also gathered evidence to be handed over to the police.
“With the evidence of their video uploads, which they took down but which were already downloaded by a man named Roy Suryo. Right, we are ready. Perhaps two or three people will be reported. At the very least two, at most three,” he said.
Previously, Roy Suryo was reported to the police once again. This time, he was reported for alleged defamation and slander by the chairman of Gibranisti, Taufik Bilfaqih, at the South Jakarta Police.
The report was filed under number LP/B/2805/VII/SPKT/POLRES METRO JAKARTA SELATAN. The man known as Bill filed the report on Thursday (16/7).
Bill said the case originated from the furore over the validation of Roy Suryo’s doctoral degree at UNJ. Bill said he felt defamed by Roy Suryo during a recent press conference.
“So this relates to defamation, insult, and attacks on my honour and dignity, which were then glorified by the person concerned, leading people to view me as a slanderer, a liar, a spreader of hoaxes. Well, I will not accept that,” said Bill after filing the report at the South Jakarta Metro Police on Thursday (16/7).
