Suspect in the case concerning the diplomas of Indonesia’s 7th President Joko Widodo (Jokowi), Roy Suryo, was reportedly arrested by Jakarta Metropolitan Police investigators on Friday morning (19/6).

Roy’s legal counsel, Ahmad Khozinudin, stated that Roy was arrested at his residence in Bintaro, South Tangerang, Banten. He explained that Roy Suryo was arrested by police in an unethical manner, in a private room within the house and without waiting for legal counsel.

Ahmad said the action was uncivilised amidst the implementation of the new Criminal Code (KUHP). “The request from our client and his wife to wait for legal counsel to arrive during the arrest process was ignored, and they threatened to handcuff him if he refused to comply. So it was an uncivilised act in the midst of the KUHP and the newly applied KUHP,” he said when contacted.

Furthermore, he claimed officers from the Jakarta Metropolitan Police forced their way into a private room, even though Roy Suryo’s wife had asked them to wait in the living room. “Our client, Mr Roy Suryo, was arrested at his residence in Bintaro, Tangerang, while he was with his family and in a private room,” said Ahmad. “His wife had asked them not to enter, to wait in the living room. But they forced their way into the bedroom to find our client,” said Khozinudin.

Besides Roy, another suspect, Tifauziah Tyassuma alias Doctor Tifa, was also arrested. The Jakarta Metropolitan Police have not yet provided a statement regarding the arrests of Roy Suryo and Doctor Tifa.

The Jakarta Metropolitan Police previously stated that the case files for Roy Suryo and Tifauziah Tyassuma alias Doctor Tifa in the case of alleged fake diplomas of Indonesia’s 7th President Joko Widodo had been declared complete, or P21, by the DKI Jakarta High Prosecutor’s Office. “Alhamdulillah, as of today the prosecutor has declared that the case files we sent to the DKI High Prosecutor’s Office no longer require the fulfilment of the deficiencies we previously addressed,” said the Director of General Criminal Investigation at the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Senior Commissioner Iman Imanuddin, at the Jakarta Metropolitan Police headquarters on Tuesday (2/6).

In this case, the Jakarta Metropolitan Police named several individuals as suspects. However, some of them, including Rismon Hasiholan Sianipar, obtained a legal resolution through the method of substantive justice (restorative justice) after meeting Jokowi and apologising. Rismon has now even affirmed the authenticity of Jokowi’s diplomas and authored a book titled ‘Authentication of Joko Widodo’s Diplomas’. The final draft of his work has been signed by Jokowi, and the father of Indonesian Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka has asked Rismon to hold a book review of the work at Gadjah Mada University (UGM).
