Lawmaker Hopes Trial Will Clarify Jokowi Diploma Issue

A member of House Commission III, Abdullah, has expressed hope that the trial for the alleged defamation case concerning the diploma of Indonesia’s 7th President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) at the East Jakarta District Court can put an end to the public controversy. He stated that the diploma issue has caused prolonged public unrest. “This matter has been going on for quite some time and has caused a stir in society. We hope the trial can provide clarity so that this polemic can be resolved thoroughly,” Abdullah told reporters on Friday (3/7/2026). Abdullah said the public’s energy and thoughts should not be exhausted debating an issue that lacks legal certainty. He noted there are still many national problems that require everyone’s attention. “Let us not waste the public’s mind on an unclear matter. There are still many important issues that need our collective attention,” he said. He hopes the trial process for the Jokowi diploma case proceeds smoothly and professionally. Consequently, he added, public attention will no longer be fixated on the unresolved diploma issue. “We fully entrust this matter to law enforcement. Let the legal process run professionally, independently, and in accordance with applicable regulations,” said Abdullah. “The most important thing is that this diploma issue must be resolved immediately so it does not cause further unrest and the public can refocus on various important agendas for the nation’s progress,” he added. The trial of Tifauzia Tyassuma, also known as Dr Tifa, regarding accusations of a fake diploma belonging to the 7th President Jokowi has commenced. She is charged with committing criminal defamation and slander against Jokowi over the allegations. Dr Tifa’s first trial was held at the East Jakarta District Court on Thursday (2/7). Dr Tifa is alleged to have used social media to spread information claiming Jokowi used a fake diploma while serving as a public official. Dr Tifa rejected an offer to pursue a peaceful resolution regarding the charges. Jokowi himself is reportedly prepared to attend the next trial session and present his original diploma.
