Lawmaker backs TNI role in Gaza stabilisation force
Member of Commission I of the House of Representatives, Nurul Arifin said the mission would allow the military to enhance its capacity in multinational coordination and humanitarian crisis management, reflecting a global shift in the concept of security beyond traditional combat operations.
“Many situations require the presence of troops tasked with maintaining stability without having to engage in combat operations,” she said in Jakarta on Tuesday.
While expressing support for the government’s efforts to maintain Indonesia’s relevance in resolving global conflicts, Arifin emphasized that diplomatic initiatives must remain aligned with the constitutional mandate to promote world peace and social justice.
She noted that stability is a prerequisite for recovery efforts in Gaza, adding that security guarantees are essential to ensure the smooth distribution of humanitarian aid and the effective reconstruction of infrastructure.
Regarding the stabilization force plan, Arifin urged the government to provide clear information to the public, particularly concerning the specific duties assigned to Indonesian troops, while ensuring maximum protection for personnel deployed on the mission.
“As long as the mandate focuses on civilian protection and humanitarian operations and does not extend into combat activities, I see the Gaza mission as a constructive step,” she said.
Arifin also expressed confidence that Indonesia’s participation would reinforce its image as a country committed to contributing to global peace, citing its longstanding involvement in various international peacekeeping missions.
“Making direct contributions to maintaining stability and assisting civilians is part of our moral and political responsibility,” she added.
Her remarks followed President Prabowo Subianto’s statement that Indonesia is prepared to deploy 8,000 personnel to Gaza under the International Stabilization Force framework, with Indonesia granted the authority to appoint a deputy commander for the mission.
