Law of the jungle

Law of the jungle

From Merdeka

It seems that the law of the jungle has moved to town. Could it be caused by the fact that most of our forests have been destroyed or burned by greedy forest concessionaires?

To recall the tragedies occurring in many parts of the country recently like Malang, Banyuwangi, Ketapang, Ambon, Sambas, Aceh etc. makes my hair stand on end. Indonesians, usually noted for their hospitality, smiles and friendliness, have now become bestial -- cruel, wild and violent.

What catastrophe is befalling this republic? What sins have we committed to deserve this unbearable punishment? Please God, forgive this nation of ours! Bestow on us peacefulness and harmonious relationships.

Officials are blaming each other, people are fighting each other, students frequently brawl. Where is our sense of humanity and do we still have a conscience? Don't move the law of the jungle to town or turn people into beasts.

You soldiers, national and religious leaders, and in fact the whole Indonesian population, should know that violence never solves a problem; it does not provide a way out of difficulties; it could even lead the nation to the brink of total destruction.

Instead, we should look into ourselves and seek better insight. Why don't we restrain ourselves, because violence is surely not the best medicine to cure the nation's disease.
