Law Ministry says cooperation with Russia strengthens IP ecosystem

The Ministry of Law has stated that cooperation between the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI) and the Russian intellectual property authority, Rospatent, will strengthen the national intellectual property (IP) ecosystem whilst opening opportunities for Indonesian innovators to enter the Russian market. Director General of Intellectual Property at the Ministry of Law, Hermansyah Siregar, said the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Rospatent represents DJKI’s commitment to expanding its international network to improve the protection and utilisation of intellectual property. “Through this collaboration, we want to encourage capacity building, technology utilisation, and create greater opportunities for Indonesian innovation and products to compete in the international market, including Russia,” Hermansyah said in a statement received in Jakarta on Thursday. According to him, the MoU signed by DJKI and Rospatent in Geneva, Switzerland, on Tuesday (7/7), serves as a foundation for strengthening cooperation between Indonesia and Russia in the field of intellectual property. In addition to signing the MoU, both parties agreed on a number of strategic agendas, including cooperation on the utilisation of digital data and patent analysis, capacity building in intellectual property valuation, information exchange, and exploring the implementation of a Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH) to accelerate patent examination. Furthermore, the two countries will strengthen the protection of geographical indications through the exchange of experiences and best practices. “We are optimistic that the signing of this MoU will provide tangible benefits for both countries,” said Hermansyah. As a follow-up, Rospatent has invited Indonesia to participate in a project to develop an intellectual property valuation website under the framework of the Committee on Development and Intellectual Property (CDIP). In return, Indonesia invited Russia to attend the Global Forum on Cross-border Copyright Royalty Governance, which will be held in Bali in October 2026.
