Law Ministry prepares integrated justice system for special cases

The Ministry of Law is preparing an integrated criminal justice system through a forum named Mahkumjakpolpas to strengthen the handling of special cases involving sexual violence, child protection, and Indonesian migrant workers in the implementation of the new Criminal Code (KUHP) and Criminal Procedure Code (KUHAP).

Minister of Law Supratman Andi Agtas stated that the Mahkumjakpolpas forum will soon be established, involving the Supreme Court, the Ministry of Law, the Police, the Attorney General’s Office, and the Directorate General of Corrections. “Currently, the Ministry of Law together with the Deputy Minister will soon form what is called Mahkumjakpolpas,” he said in Jakarta on Thursday.

According to Supratman, the forum is designed to support an integrated criminal justice system so that the handling of specific cases can be more effective and coordinated. The collaboration focuses on strengthening protection for victims of sexual violence, children, and Indonesian migrant workers.

The Ministry of Law supports the implementation of the KUHP and KUHAP through regulatory drafting, institutional governance strengthening, human resource capacity building via the Human Resources Development Agency (BPSDM), and the utilisation of Legal Aid Posts (Posbakum) that have been established in 83,960 villages and sub-districts. “This is a joint effort to provide protection in certain cases. We are discussing specific cases, namely criminal acts of sexual violence, the Child Protection Law, and the protection of our migrant workers,” Supratman said. He added that synergy among law enforcement agencies is a crucial step to ensure the new KUHP and KUHAP can support integrated case handling, from the law enforcement process to providing protection for victims.
