Law Minister: Polri regulations must be updated to adapt to technology
The National Police (Polri), as a state instrument, plays a vital role in maintaining public security and order, enforcing the law, and providing protection, guidance, and service to the community.
Speaking in Jakarta on Thursday, Minister of Law Supratman Andi Agtas stated that updating police regulations is necessary so that the institution can adapt to technological developments and increasingly complex security challenges. Supratman noted that changes in the strategic environment, advancements in information technology, and the dynamics of public security and order demand that the National Police continuously improve their institutional capacity and the professionalism of their human resources.
“The National Police, as a state instrument, plays a role in maintaining public security and order, enforcing the law, and providing protection, guidance, and service to the community,” he said.
According to him, the increasingly complex challenges to public security and order are driving the government to strengthen the legal foundation of the Indonesian National Police through a revision of the National Police Law.
Supratman stated that achieving a just, prosperous, and civil society based on Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia requires domestic security and order stability. Therefore, he noted, enhancing the performance of the National Police in exercising its functions, roles, duties, and authorities is an inseparable necessity.
“Consequently, the existence of a more responsive and adaptive legal foundation is an urgent need to ensure that the National Police can perform their functions and authorities optimally in accordance with the demands of the era,” he added.
Previously, during a working meeting to discuss the National Police Bill, the government proposed several reinforcements, including clarifying the duties and responsibilities of the Chief of the Indonesian National Police (Kapolri), adjusting the requirements of core policing duties, and strengthening the duties and functions of the National Police Commission (Kompolnas).
Furthermore, the discussion of the Bill also covers the fulfilment of rights for National Police members, the filling of positions outside the police organisation, the retirement age limit, as well as the implementation and development of professional police education.
