Law Minister: Fee Hike for Renouncing Indonesian Citizenship Aims to Improve Services
Law Minister Supratman Andi Agtas stated that the increase in the application fee for renouncing Indonesian citizenship (WNI) by Rp5 million, effective 1 August 2026, is aimed at improving services. “There is indeed a tariff adjustment. But the point is, firstly, the tariff adjustment is in the context of improving services,” said Supratman at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Monday (20/7). He noted that the Government Regulation governing non-tax state revenue has not been amended for almost 10 years. Supratman conveyed this in the context of accelerating the digital transformation of government services. He said the increase will be used for equipment maintenance to continue driving the optimisation of digital services. “So, it is not at all burdensome and does not apply to all Indonesian people,” he said. Supratman also mentioned that the number of applicants for renunciation of Indonesian citizenship at the Ministry of Law is very small. He said the number of applications for renunciation of citizenship is under 300. “The current applicants at the Ministry of Law are only around 200 or 300 people,” he stated. In addition to the increase in the fee for renouncing WNI status, Supratman also said that the increase in the application fee for foreign nationals (WNA) to become Indonesian citizens would not have much impact. He noted that the average applicant for Indonesian citizenship is a person with adequate financial capability.
