Law minister asserts Indonesia will not beg for royalties
Law Minister Supratman Andi Agtas, at the Global Forum on Intellectual Property (GFIP) held as part of Singapore IP Week 2026 on Wednesday, asserted that Indonesia will not beg for royalties.
He said Indonesia only needs justice and transparency in order to fight for royalty rights for the nation’s creative industry players.
“The issue of digital royalties is not merely a matter of intellectual property law, but rather part of an inclusive economic growth agenda,” Supratman said when confirmed from Jakarta.
As a form of concrete commitment, he said Indonesia has submitted a proposal regarding a Legally Binding International Instrument on Copyright Royalty Governance in the Digital Environment at the Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights (SCCR) of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
Supratman said a sustainable creative economy can only be realised when creators receive proper appreciation and remuneration for their works.
Therefore, the Law Minister invited ASEAN plus China and Korea to jointly strive for transparency and fairness in royalties.
He also affirmed Indonesia’s readiness to collaborate closely with Singapore, ASEAN member states, WIPO and all international partners, in order to make ASEAN and Asia a centre of global economic growth based on intellectual property.
The high-level forum in Singapore was attended by a number of figures, including Singapore’s Minister for Law and Second Minister for Home Affairs Edwin Tong; Singapore’s Minister for Trade and Industry Tan See Leng; Cambodia’s Minister of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation Hem Vanndy; WIPO Director General Daren Tang; and leaders of the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS).
The commitment to regulatory reform and strengthening the intellectual property ecosystem is also being promoted through synergy with mass media, including in the context of ASEAN Journalism.
In addition to music, Indonesia is also fighting for royalties for journalistic works.
Active collaboration with press personnel at the regional level is expected to broaden the dissemination of information, increase public awareness of intellectual property protection, and strengthen Indonesia’s position in intellectual property governance in the Southeast Asian region.
