Law Minister and WIPO Director General Meet to Strengthen Indonesia's IP Ecosystem
Minister of Law Supratman Andi Agtas met with World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Director General Daren Tang at WIPO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, on Monday, 6 July 2026. The bilateral meeting discussed strengthening cooperation in developing the intellectual property (KI) ecosystem, accelerating service transformation, and enhancing Indonesia’s role in the global KI system.
During the meeting, Supratman expressed appreciation for WIPO’s technical support, which has helped modernise the system and strengthen the institutional capacity of the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI). He also reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to continuing to strengthen strategic cooperation in various fields.
‘We are grateful for WIPO’s attention to various programmes to strengthen the intellectual property system in Indonesia, including its support for the Pasti Ada Solusi programme that we are running to realise more transparent and accountable public services through bureaucratic reform,’ said Supratman.
Supratman further stated that Indonesia is preparing to become an International Searching Authority (ISA). He said the government is continuing to prepare the administrative, legal, and operational infrastructure to meet the requirements.
In addition, Supratman emphasised Indonesia’s commitment to promoting fair global royalty governance through an international instrument, the Indonesia Proposal. The government is also drafting a new Copyright Bill that incorporates several substances from the Indonesia Proposal currently being submitted at WIPO, including provisions regarding journalistic works and the impact of artificial intelligence on the copyright regime.
Supratman also expressed hope that cooperation between Indonesia and WIPO would be further strengthened through human resource capacity building. One proposed effort is to open opportunities for qualified DJKI employees to work within WIPO, thereby gaining experience in international intellectual property administration.
‘We hope WIPO can provide greater opportunities for Indonesian human resources to contribute within WIPO. The presence of Indonesian representatives in this organisation will further strengthen institutional cooperation while enhancing our human resource capacity,’ said Supratman.
In response, Daren Tang affirmed that WIPO will continue to support the strengthening of Indonesia’s intellectual property ecosystem. This support includes assistance towards achieving ISA status, human resource capacity development, and the implementation of several collaborative projects this year.
‘We will continue to provide technical support, training, and capacity building in Indonesia’s process towards becoming an International Searching Authority,’ said Daren Tang.
Daren Tang also revealed that WIPO will launch three collaborative projects in Indonesia this year, namely the development of an IP Enterprise programme with Japfa, a project for the preservation and economic strengthening of batik, and the development of the animation sector with the Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises. He noted that batik is a cultural asset that deserves special attention because it has received international recognition and possesses significant economic potential.
Furthermore, Daren Tang assured that WIPO will continue to provide space for Indonesia to contribute more significantly to the organisation. During his tenure as Director General, he is committed to ensuring that Indonesia has representatives who can work within WIPO as part of strengthening the long-term partnership between Indonesia and the organisation.
