Jakarta (ANTARA) - Law and Human Rights Minister Supratman Andi Agtas said the government is waiting for the readiness of the DPR RI to discuss revisions to Law Number 7 of 2017 concerning General Elections. Supratman, at the Parliament Complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Wednesday, said the revision of the Pemilu Law is an initiative of the DPR, so the government is waiting for the schedule of its discussion from Parliament. ‘The government is ready to discuss, but we are waiting from the DPR,’ he said. He added that there is no urgency to push for the revision of the Pemilu Law because the 2029 election phase is still quite a long way off. ‘If we have entered the 2029 election phase, we may use the existing law for now. So, there is nothing urgent related to that,’ he said. Previously, the Speaker of the DPR, Puan Maharani, said the revision of the Pemilu Law will be designed to prioritise the principles of honesty and fairness and not disadvantage the people. ‘We want the upcoming elections to be conducted in a jurdil (free and fair) manner, and not disadvantage the people, and to be beneficial for the nation and the country,’ Puan said in Jakarta on Tuesday (12/5). She did not deny that the 2029 election phase is approaching. Nevertheless, she said, the Pemilu Bill must be designed to create the best electoral system for the people. ‘So, we will continue to hold talks as best as possible, both informal and formal,’ she said.
