Launching 100 GWp Solar Power Programme, Prabowo: We Will Truly Stand on Our Own Feet

President Prabowo Subianto has raised the bar for the development of the 100 gigawatt peak (GWp) Solar Power Plant (PLTS) project.

The target, originally set for completion within three years or by 2029, is now being pushed to be completed more quickly, within two years.

Prabowo also promised to award a star or state honour to the energy team if they are able to complete the giant project within two years.

This was conveyed by Prabowo in his remarks at the Launching and Groundbreaking Event for the 100 GWp PLTS Programme on Tuesday, 25 August 2026.

“Thank you to all elements, today is an important day for our launch and I believe perhaps in less than three years we will reach 100 Gigawatts. Is that right?” said Prabowo.

Prabowo then compared the PLTS development target with the government’s experience in pursuing food self-sufficiency. According to him, the four-year target given for food self-sufficiency was actually achieved much faster, namely within one year.

“Previously, I gave a four-year target for food self-sufficiency, the economic team, the agriculture team, and the food team managed to achieve it in one year,” said Prabowo.

This achievement led Prabowo to raise his expectations for the energy team. If the three-year target for the 100 GWp PLTS was still considered too lenient, Prabowo openly pushed for the project’s completion within just two years.

“That means if I give a three-year target to the energy team, no way, let’s make it two years. If they succeed in two years, the energy team will get another star, I will give a state honour,” he asserted.

The statement serves as a direct challenge for the ranks responsible for the energy sector. Previously, Prabowo had asked Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia, Head of Danantara Rosan Roeslani, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, President Director of PLN Darmawan Prasodjo, and President Director of Pertamina Simon Aloysius Mantiri to state their readiness to oversee the programme.

For Prabowo, the development of 100 GWp of PLTS is not merely a project to add generation capacity. The programme is positioned as part of a larger agenda to bring Indonesia towards energy independence.

“In essence, with 100 Gigawatts, we will truly become a nation that stands on our own feet,” said Prabowo.
