The latest reports indicate that 15 people have died and more than 100 others have been injured. Regional civil defence director Rodrigo Sosmena, as quoted by AFP, stated that 12 people died in the Soccksargen region on Mindanao island, where an additional 129 people were injured. Meanwhile, three other fatalities were recorded in the province of Davao Occidental. Previously, several aftershocks up to magnitude 6.1 have occurred in the region. The earthquake also triggered tsunami warnings in Indonesia. The Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BMKG) confirmed the earthquake, noting a magnitude 7.7 tremor approximately 244 kilometres northwest of Karatung Island, North Sulawesi. Following monitoring, the tsunami warnings for several Indonesian regions were officially lifted. According to the official BMKG website, the tsunami threat ended at approximately 10:15 WIB. β€œThe TSUNAMI Early Warning caused by the Mag: 7.7 earthquake on 08-Jun-24 06:37:42 WIB is declared to have ended,” stated the BMKG.
