Latest Survey: US Image Worldwide, Including Indonesia, Trends Negative

The latest survey results released on Tuesday (23/6/2026) by the Pew Research Center found that global trust in United States (US) President Donald Trump remains low, while perceptions of the US as a reliable partner continue to weaken. Quoted from USA Today, the US image abroad also tends to be negative. Currently, only 37 per cent of people worldwide view the country positively, while 57 per cent give Uncle Sam a negative assessment. Indonesia is among 15 countries experiencing a sharp decline in favourable views of the US, alongside Italy, Nigeria, South Africa, and South Korea. The survey, conducted between February and May 2026 among 42,151 adults in 36 countries, showed only 23 per cent trust Trump’s leadership in handling world affairs. Around two-thirds expressed little or no confidence in Trump’s ability on the international stage. The survey results also indicated that trust in Trump declined in 16 of 24 countries and did not increase in any country. This condition was accompanied by a weakening perception of the US’s global role. Only 35 per cent stated the US contributes to world peace and stability, and 32 per cent believe the US considers other countries’ interests in its foreign policy. The decline is most visible among long-standing US allies. In Canada, the percentage of respondents who view the US as a reliable partner dropped from 83 per cent in 2022 to 35 per cent currently. In Germany, respondents who believe the US considers other countries’ interests in its foreign policy fell from 60 per cent in 2023 to 23 per cent today.
