Latest Survey: Americans Furious, Admit Defeat in War Against Iran
Washington D.C. - President Donald Trump’s foreign policy regarding the conflict with Iran is facing sharp criticism at home. A new national poll reveals that behind the peace agreement signed by his administration, there is massive negative sentiment among the American public, who view the deal as a strategic defeat.
According to the CBS News-YouGov survey, the majority of Americans fundamentally dislike the points of the memorandum of understanding agreed with Tehran. The primary reason the public supports ending the war now is sheer exhaustion and a belief that US military involvement in the region has been a major failure.
The data shows that while 78% of Americans chose to end the war immediately, only 22% wanted to continue military confrontation to extract more concessions from Iran. Although Trump’s advisers claim this as political support, the details of the poll tell a different story. When asked to assess the content of the agreement, only 22% felt it was advantageous for the US. In contrast, 37% believed the deal was far more beneficial to Iran, and 41% considered it balanced. Even within Trump’s own party, only 39% of Republicans believe their administration won the negotiations. Overall, 45% of citizens agree the war was a strategic failure, compared to 29% who disagree.
The public also considers Trump’s primary objective—permanently halting Iran’s nuclear programme—a complete failure. A total of 69% of Americans, including 45% of Republican voters, believe the agreement will not be able to curb Iran’s nuclear ambitions. This sentiment aligns with a mid-June Fox News poll showing 64% of registered voters doubt Iran will cease producing nuclear weapons.
Negative sentiment extends to other strategic areas. 68% of respondents believe the deal will not stop Iran from threatening other nations in the future, and 79% stated the agreement has not made Iranian leaders more pro-American. This is compounded by the assessment of 74% of citizens who believe the war failed to make the Iranian people safer or freer, despite that being touted as a primary goal by the Trump administration earlier this year.
Despite Trump’s repeated claims that US military strikes crippled Iran’s combat capabilities and nuclear infrastructure, the American public remains sceptical. Only 37% believe Iran’s position has weakened post-war. The rest assess that Iran’s strength remains the same (38%) or has even grown stronger (25%) compared to before the conflict. Although Iran suffered significant military losses, Tehran demonstrated substantial global leverage by blockading the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route for global energy commodities, threatening worldwide economic stability. Consequently, an absolute majority of 57% of Americans believe the war created more problems than it solved.
The American public also believes the Trump administration failed to anticipate the massive economic fallout from the war. 64% of respondents, including 51% of Republicans, believe the impact on the global economy far exceeded the government’s expectations. This is reinforced by internal reports suggesting the White House underestimated Iran’s willingness to close the Strait of Hormuz. Ultimately, war fatigue became the main factor behind the compromise. The Trump administration initially predicted the conflict would last only four to six weeks, but it dragged on for nearly four months without clear results. Approximately two-thirds of Americans now conclude that Trump rushed into a peace deal not because all mission objectives were achieved, but because the president became frustrated and simply wanted the conflict to end.
