Latest on the Massive Fire at Jatiwaringin Landfill in Tangerang
The fire at the Jatiwaringin Final Processing Site (TPA) in Tangerang, which has been burning since 30 June, continues to rage, leaving several fire spots that are difficult to control. Joint officers are still battling the blaze, with the Tangerang Regency Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) and related regional apparatus organisations (OPD) continuing ground-level firefighting efforts in accessible areas.
Two water-bombing helicopters from the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) have been deployed to accelerate the firefighting process from the air. This measure was taken because most of the fire spots are located at the top of high waste piles, making them difficult for ground crews to reach. Heavy equipment, including excavators, is also being used to break down the waste piles so that fire spots within the mounds can be more easily accessed and extinguished.
A long queue of rubbish trucks was seen along the access road to the Jatiwaringin landfill, as the route was forced into a single lane for both entry and exit. Thick smoke from the fire continues to billow and drift with the wind. When the wind blows north, the smoke shrouds residential areas near the site, disrupting the activities of local residents. Amidst these conditions, a farmer was observed continuing to harvest grain in a field covered by smoke, while several children watched the helicopter operations dropping water on the fire.
In response to the situation, the Tangerang Regency Government has established a Disaster Emergency Response Status for the Jatiwaringin TPA fire through Tangerang Regent Decree Number 609 of 2026. The emergency status is effective from 1 to 14 July 2026 to expedite firefighting efforts and minimise the impact on the community and the environment. All government elements and disaster management teams continue to work in synergy to bring the fire under control and reduce the smoke affecting the area surrounding the Jatiwaringin TPA.
