Latest Intelligence Data: Trump Actually Lost in the US-Iran War

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - The latest intelligence reports refute US President Donald Trump’s claims regarding major destruction to Tehran’s military. Iran is said to still maintain most of its missile capabilities in the strategic Strait of Hormuz region.

Citing a New York Times report, a classified US intelligence assessment from earlier this month states that Iran still controls and operates 30 out of 33 missile sites along the Strait of Hormuz. These locations are assessed to be capable of targeting US warships and oil tankers passing through this vital global shipping lane.

The report also debunks Trump’s previous narrative. Trump had stated that Iran’s military strength had been “destroyed” due to the joint US-Israel bombing campaign that ran from 28 February until the ceasefire took effect on 8 April.

According to the report, Iran also retains around 70% of its mobile missile launchers as well as 70% of its pre-war missile stockpile. This situation indicates that Tehran’s military capabilities have not been completely paralysed despite weeks of intensive airstrikes.

The Strait of Hormuz itself is the world’s most strategic energy route. Around 20% of global oil and liquefied natural gas trade passes through this narrow area every day.

Iran had previously closed access to the Strait of Hormuz to what it called “enemy ships” in response to the US and Israeli attacks. After that, Tehran has continued to assert its right to control maritime traffic in the area and to collect tolls from passing ships.

This situation amplifies global market concerns over the potential for disruptions to the world’s energy supply if the conflict flares up again.

On the other hand, negotiations between Washington and Tehran are still at an impasse, with both countries reportedly rejecting the latest peace proposals over the weekend because they were deemed unacceptable. Trump is even said to have received briefings on options for additional strikes against Iran if talks fail to reach a breakthrough.

Washington demands that Iran dismantle its nuclear and ballistic missile programmes. However, Tehran firmly rejects these demands and insists that its uranium enrichment programme is solely for civilian purposes.

Iran has also put forward several peace conditions, including an end to Israel’s war against Hezbollah in Lebanon, the lifting of economic sanctions, payment of reparations, and recognition of Iran’s “sovereignty” over the Strait of Hormuz.
