Latest Data on Fatal Earthquake in NTT: 38 Dead, 2,000 Displaced

The death toll from the earthquake in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) had risen to 38 as of 15:00 on Saturday (15/8/2026), according to data released by the Head of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), Lieutenant General TNI Suharyanto. Two victims suffered serious injuries and 11 sustained minor injuries, while approximately 2,000 people have been displaced independently.

“There are 38 recorded fatalities. Then two people with serious injuries and 11 with minor injuries. Approximately 2,000 people have evacuated independently,” Suharyanto said during a press conference updating the condition and handling of the aftermath of the M7.7 earthquake in Nagekeo Regency, NTT.

The magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck eastern Indonesia in the early hours of Saturday morning (15/8/2026). A small tsunami wave of less than one metre was detected at several points before the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) eventually lifted the tsunami early warning around three hours after the main shock.

It was previously reported that a joint SAR team in the Maumere port area, Sikka Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, said evacuation efforts were still ongoing. The Head of Basarnas Maumere, Fathur Rahman, said that so far 20 fatalities had been found, six people were injured, and two residents remained buried under rubble.

Access to the nearest point to the earthquake epicentre in Nagekeo Regency remains completely paralysed. Land routes are blocked by landslide material, while communication signals have been cut off. Rescue teams are now racing against time trying to reach the location via sea routes using ferries.
