Latest Data: Economic Inequality Between Urban and Rural Residents Rises

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded that the level of population expenditure inequality in Indonesia has risen, according to the latest figures as of March 2026.

The level of inequality, as measured by the Gini ratio, now stands at 0.368, higher than the figure recorded in September 2025 of 0.363.

However, compared to March 2025, it remains lower, as the Gini ratio at that time was 0.375.

“Inequality in Indonesia was recorded at 0.368, up 0.005 from September 2025,” said M. Edy Mahmud, Deputy for Statistical Analysis and Balance at BPS, during a press conference at the BPS head office in Jakarta on Wednesday (5/8/2026).

BPS recorded that inequality in both urban and rural areas also increased, based on figures as of March 2026.

The Gini ratio stands at 0.387 for data as of March 2026, up from 0.383 as of September 2025, although it remains lower than the March 2025 level of 0.395.

Meanwhile, in rural areas, the Gini ratio, or level of inequality, stands at 0.296, also up from the figure recorded in September 2025 of 0.295. However, compared to March 2025, it also remains lower, as the figure then was 0.299.
