The driver of a BYD electric car, identified by the initial S, 46, has been named a suspect after hitting four vehicles in succession and running over a ride-hailing motorcyclist, identified as HS, 56, on Jalan Panglima Polim, Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta. HS was reported to have suffered a broken leg and has since undergone surgery.
The accident occurred on Friday (23 October) at 4.48pm. South Jakarta Traffic Police said the BYD was travelling north from the south when the collision began.
“(The driver’s) status is that of a suspect,” South Jakarta Traffic Police Law Enforcement Sub-Directorate head AKBP Muhammad Adiel Aristo told reporters on Sunday (25 October 2026).
The BYD struck a Honda Brio, registration B-2967-NGY, travelling in the same direction ahead of it, then veered left and hit a Honda Beat motorcycle ridden by HS and a Wuling car.
The vehicle then mounted the pavement and hit two other parked cars.
HS suffered a fracture to his left leg and abrasions. He was taken to hospital for medical treatment.
Preliminary findings
Police have outlined their preliminary assessment of the incident in which the BYD hit several vehicles and ran over the ride-hailing driver. S is suspected of being startled and panicking while driving.
“We are still looking into the cause. The preliminary examination indicates that the driver was startled and panicked,” Adiel said on Sunday (25 October 2026).
Police are continuing to question S to establish the precise cause of the accident.
A urine test found no alcohol or drugs.
Ride-hailing driver’s condition
Hasan Syukur, 56, also known as Agus, was run over by the BYD in the Blok M area of South Jakarta and suffered a broken leg. Police have given an update on his condition.
“The victim has just undergone surgery and remains under observation at Fatmawati Hospital,” Adiel said on Sunday (25 October 2026).
Adiel said the driver, identified as S, had told police he was startled and panicked while driving. Investigators are continuing their examination.
“We are still looking into the cause. The preliminary examination indicates that the driver was startled and panicked. The driver is still being questioned and the investigators are examining the case further,” he said.
Ride-hailing driver video-calls his child
Hasan Syukur managed to call his child, who lives in Ciomas, Serang Regency.
Hasan’s child, Ewis Hildayani, 27, said her father suddenly made a video call on Friday (23 October). Hasan was lying in the emergency department at Fatmawati Hospital at the time.
“Dad wasn’t allowed to move much; he was lying in the emergency department,” Ewis said when met on Saturday (24 October 2026).
Hasan was accompanied there by fellow ride-hailing drivers. They were also waiting for his wife, who lives in Cengkareng, West Jakarta.
Ewis said she panicked when she saw that her father’s left leg was broken. She then asked him to explain what had happened.
“I asked him where he was hit. Was he hit, or did he hit someone? Was the vehicle that hit him a motorbike or a car? I asked about the sequence of events,” she said.
Ewis said her father underwent surgery for his fractures on Saturday (24 October). His left leg was broken.
“They said his spinal bone was crushed, and the bone in his left leg was broken,” Ewis said.
Ewis had not yet received an update on her father’s condition after the operation. She said she was leaving his recovery in the hands of fate and hoped the driver would be punished appropriately.
“What matters is that the driver takes responsibility. My father was healthy before this, and he needs to be supported until he is well again,” she said.
“It doesn’t matter if he can’t work; what matters is that he gets better,” she added.
