Tehran (ANTARA) - Ali Khamenei, the late Supreme Leader of Iran who died during a US-Israel attack on 28 February, will be buried in the city of Mashhad, in north-eastern Iran, according to a senior municipal official in Tehran on Tuesday (2/6).

Mohammad-Amin Tavakkolizadeh, Tehran’s Deputy Mayor for Social and Cultural Affairs, stated that Khamenei will be interred at the Imam Reza Holy Shrine in accordance with his final wishes and the recommendations of his family, as reported by the semi-official Iranian news agency, Fars News Agency.

A three-day period of final honours and a 24-hour funeral procession are planned to be held in Tehran, likely at the Grand Mosalla or the mausoleum of Iran’s first Supreme Leader, Imam Khomeini. His remains will then be transported to Qom and Mashhad for similar ceremonies, Tavakkolizadeh added.

The series of ceremonies is scheduled to commence in the second half of June. The number of participants in the Tehran event is expected to reach up to 20 million people, he continued.

Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the late Iranian leader, was selected as Iran’s new Supreme Leader in early March.

In a separate report on Tuesday, Fars, citing sources familiar with the matter, stated that the exchange of messages between Iran and the US has been halted for at least several days. The final message sent from Tehran to Washington was described as a ‘clear’ message regarding Lebanon, which has drawn global attention, the report noted.

This report follows a post on Truth Social by US President Donald Trump on Tuesday, in which he wrote that negotiations between the US and Iran ‘are still ongoing.’ Trump stated that reports regarding the suspension of negotiations are ‘untrue and incorrect.’
