Last year's road death toll 30 a day
JAKARTA (JP): Every day last year more than 30 people died and
57 others were injured as a result of traffic accidents in
Indonesia.
The national police recorded that 11,019 people were killed,
9,941 seriously injured and 11,631 slightly injured in 16,516
serious traffic accidents during 1995.
A serious accident is one in which at least one person is
injured.
Even though there was a decline in the number of accidents
last year as compared to the year before, there was a slight
increase in the number of fatal casualties. There were 17,469
traffic accidents in 1994, in which 11,004 people were killed,
11,055 slightly injured and 12,348 seriously injured.
Data compiled at the state insurance company, PT Jasa Raharja,
paints a different picture however. Last year it paid Rp 51.8
billion (US$22.5 million) in compensation for the deaths of
16,245 people and the sufferings of 29,262 who were injured and
146 who became permanently disabled because of the accidents.
In Jakarta alone, there were 1,215 serious traffic accidents
in 1995. Five hundred and eight people died, 867 were seriously
injured and 429 slightly injured. In 1994, there were 1,440
serious traffic accidents, in which 584 people died, 1,026 were
seriously injured and 503 slightly injured.
The police also recorded almost 16,000 traffic violations on
the toll roads throughout Java in 1995. Most involved people
driving too slowly or on the hard shoulder of the highway.
