Last-minute shoppers jam C. Java streets

SEMARANG: The local governor said on Friday that thousands of people had flocked to 112 markets along the main thoroughfares in Central Java, causing a severe traffic congestion.

Central Java Governor Mardiyanto expressed concern that the traders and buyers were encroaching onto the streets and were thus impeding the passage of cars, motorcycles and other vehicles.

He followed the statement with praise for several motorcycle lover clubs, whose members helped the police direct traffic. -- JP
