Large Fire Engulfs Cipayung Landfill Area in Depok, Queuing Rubbish Trucks Saved
A large fire struck the Cipayung Final Disposal Site (TPA) in Depok City on Thursday evening, 16 July 2026, with flames engulfing an area of the waste pile before being brought under control. The cause of the fire remains unknown.
The Head of the Depok City Environment and Sanitation Agency (DLHK), Reni Siti Nuraeni, stated that based on initial information, the fire broke out around 7.30 p.m. Western Indonesia Time. ‘The cause still needs to be investigated,’ Reni told reporters at the scene.
She explained that the landfill management routinely conducts patrols as a precautionary measure to detect and address potential fires early. When the fire appeared, officers immediately carried out localisation efforts to prevent it from spreading to other areas. ‘Alhamdulillah, it is now extinguished, but we are currently in the cooling process to prevent any further sparks, as there are still triggers present,’ she added.
Based on initial observations, the fire started from a single point before spreading to other parts of the waste pile. Reni suspected the fire originated from the bottom of the heap. The agency has not yet determined the exact area affected as data collection is still ongoing. During the incident, several rubbish trucks queuing at the site were successfully moved to safety.
