Powerful explosions shook the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, on Sunday morning. Officials warned the blasts likely originated from a ballistic missile strike, urging residents to take shelter.

According to AFP on Sunday (22/2/2026), the warning was issued by Kyiv’s military administration shortly before 4.00 am local time (02.00 GMT), urging residents to seek immediate shelter. Moments later, AFP journalists in Kyiv heard several loud explosions.

“Attention! An air raid alert has been declared in Kyiv due to the enemy threat involving ballistic weapons,” the Kyiv military administration said, calling on residents to remain in shelters until the alert was lifted.

Regional authorities said air defence units were intercepting drones detected over the wider Kyiv region and reminded civilians not to record or post images of ongoing military activity.

There were no immediate reports of casualties.

Kyiv, which has been routinely targeted by Russian missile and drone strikes since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022, has faced waves of overnight attacks in recent weeks as Moscow intensifies its winter campaign against energy and military infrastructure.
