Laptop Prices Soar, Retailers Flock to Intel's 'Project Firefly' Budget Initiative

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - The global memory chip shortage crisis, which has driven up the selling price of consumer devices such as laptops and mobile phones, is feared to be impacting sales. Many retailers are already complaining about the phenomenon of people holding back on purchasing new electronic devices. To circumvent this, Intel has announced Project Firefly, an initiative to create cheap or entry-level laptops. The company is pursuing several approaches, including using smartphone components. Several major laptop sellers such as Dell, Asus, Acer, and Colourful are reportedly adopting Project Firefly. A number of systems are already available and others are expected to launch in the near future. Project Firefly does not only focus on the chip, but also on standardising the entire laptop design process. It also uses Wildcat Lake processors with a hardware design that can be used by manufacturers as-is or modified. The most significant change lies in the components sourced. Intel no longer relies on the traditional PC supply chain, but instead uses components from smartphones and tablets. The supply chain used is particularly for memory and audio. Tech Spot explains that both will operate in larger volumes and will make it easier for Intel and its partners to increase production, as quoted on Thursday (18/6/2026). Furthermore, Intel combines the processor with memory from mobile devices into a single unit that is integrated directly into the laptop design. This Core Logic Module will reduce development time and simplify engineering decisions made at the outset. Intel has built its cheap laptop with a thickness of 12.9 mm and uses a metal chassis. Typically, these specifications are only found on more expensive devices. The design is also crafted with a cleaner appearance. The laptop comes without visible ventilation holes. In terms of connectivity, this budget laptop is still supported by modem ports such as USB Type-A, Type-C, and Thunderbolt.
